Don’t call him a ‘soul-revivalist’! For Raphael Saadiq, soul never went away. Having said that, Saadiq’s latest album, Stone Rollin’ has an undeniable and unrelenting sixties groove (underscored by its retro cover art) which has won lots of attention from media types–including the folks at Weekend All Things Considered. The new CD may be the closest Saadiq’s come to returning to his roots as one-third of the critically acclaimed R&B trio Tony! Toni! Toné!… albeit with a little more James Brown-style funk at the edges.
During his nationally webcast Stubbs’ showcase at SXSW ’11 in March, the Oakland singer-guitarist debuted several gems from the new album, including “Heart Attack” and “Radio”. Now Saadiq’s back at Stubbs’ on Wednesday June 8th. We have his live session with KUT host Jay Trachtenberg RIGHT HERE! Check it!!!
