It’s the coolest thing ever. Even a few music reviewers have commented on it. Check out the cover of Raphael Saadiq‘s album Stone Rollin’, especially the photo of him rockin’ the mic. It’s probably one of the most awesome love letters to old-school R&B ever.
This kind of classic look really compliments Saadiq’s music style. He makes being cool look effortless. On top of that, he’s a phenomenal performer who exudes a kind of confidence that reflects the ways he’s evolved as a music artist over the years. It’s remarkable to look back on his career and see how he’s grown from his early pop-ster days with the group Tony! Toni! Tone’ into an incredible showman sharing the stage with Mick Jagger at the Grammys.
Stone Rollin’ is Saadiq’s fourth solo album, an incredible soul and R&B collection that, while obviously inspired by the mid-60s Motown sound, has this amped-up rock ‘n’ roll rawness that keeps it contemporary.
Be sure not to miss Saadiq at his show Wednesday night at Stubb’s Waller Creek Amphitheater, 801 Red River. Doors open at 7 p.m. Highly recommended. This is guaranteed to be a fantastic performance. Saadiq owns it, baby.
