Nicole Atkins is a firecracker.

That’s not a revelation, by any means. The New Jersey-born songwriter has always had a distinctive voice , but it’s recently been unleashed with a more distinct ferocity on her second release, Mondo Amore, her first album in three years since Neptune City. This time, it’s a bolder and edgier side that emerges, mixing rock, soul, country and blues while showing off Atkins’ incredible wide-ranging vocals and searing lyrics. Love and redemption? Well, you could oversimplify it that way, if you want. But it’s more like, “Here I am – and you’re damn lucky that’s the case.”

It’s not telling tales to note that Atkins has always been a fan of classic blues and rock sounds. You clearly hear that reverencein each track, and there’s no backing down from it, either. This is a sneak-attack slow burn that blazes more fiercely than her impressive debut.

Be sure to see Nicole Atkins play tonight with her band The Black Sea at Stubb’s indoor venue, 801 Red River. Highly recommended, and check out her album as soon as you get the chance.
