Music is unlimited, created from anywhere, through anything.

Take, for example, a hands-on workshop being presented by the New Media Art and Sound Summit (NMASS) and Austin music label Artificial Sound Machine called “Get Bent! 4.0.” Don’t be taken aback by the name; it’s in reference to the history and theory of circuit bending, “the creative short-circuiting of electronic devices that produce sounds.” Participants are invited to modify a variety of electronic devices and explore. Forget everything you know (or don’t know) about electronics and feel free to deconstruct and reshape.

Plus, there’s a jam session at the end. Suh-WEET.

This is the very essence of NMASS. It’s designed to inspire, to get conversations started, to have observers and participants examine music-making in completely different or non-traditional ways. Presented by community-based music organization Church of the Friendly Ghost, the three-day summit focuses on musical creativity and experimentation, and includes art, film and installations by local and touring artists. Every aspect contributes to the complete experience.

NMASS begins today, and continues through Sunday, with a series of events scheduled throughout each day at the Salvage Vanguard Theater, 2803 Manor Rd. Check the NMASS website for the lists of artists and event times, and videos from last year’s summit. The “Get Bent! 4.0″ workshop is Sunday, from 1 to 5 p.m. Recommended!
