Matt the Electrician isn’t an electrician anymore.  He began his career wiring houses in Austin during the day and playing his songs in bars at night.  He was just Matt Sever back then, but when he was forced to explain his appearance (electricians aren’t the hippest looking dudes on the block), the name stuck.

Sever released his first record in the late nineties and, depending on criteria, has about 7 albums floating around town.  His latest, Accidental Thief, was recorded in town, but for the first time in his songwriting career, Sever says he tried his hand at co-writing songs.  He spent about a year working with the House of Songs project (a collaboration between Austin and Denmark) and in the end, the title track to the new record was a suggestion made to him by a songwriting friend who commented that he’d always wanted to write a song about a thief who lacks malicious motivation – someone who steals something by accident.

All I Need” is the first track on Accidental Thief and leads the record in a sunny, banjo-driven pop direction (you should check out the cool animated video that we’ve posted below). This version of the song was recorded a couple of weeks ago just before the release of the new CD. Sever is playing a banjo-ukulele hybrid instrument, sometimes called a banjolele, and though this is a stripped-down cut, the joy of the song continues to shine through.
