Despite being such a seemingly antiquated genre, folk music’s banner is being taken up wholesale by a number of Austin bands. Time to keep your eyes peeled (and ears perked) for a new group: Hello Wheels, who will be releasing their debut EP, Baby John The Fox, at the Cactus Cafe tomorrow night.

While local groups like Marmalakes (who take part in tonight’s bill) use folk as a springboard for their brand of pop-rock, Hello Wheels is more traditional. Self-described as a “stomp-folk band,” the group is barely into their second year, but they’ve already nailed down complex, multi-part harmonies. Banjo and acoustic guitar lead the melodic charge, but upright bass, percussion, and bubbling organ round out the driving sound. Baby John is a varied debut, featuring the dirge-like “Gone Away,” the golden country-folk of “Interlude,” and the dreamy “Summer Song.” But it’s the soulful love ballad “A Woman Is A Well” that truly caught our ear. Take a listen to it below, and be prepared to sing along over at the Cactus tomorrow.
