A quick search of Gold Beach will pull up beautiful pictures of Oregon coastline or references to one of the landing beaches used for the U.S. invasion of Normandy. If I had to guess which one of those images the Austin band Gold Beach is referencing I would go with the Oregon coastline. Maybe it’s because they have pictures of it on their Myspace page or perhaps it’s because their music reminds me of a sleepy mist rolling over a rocky shore. Gold Beach is the musical stylings of Austin residents Michael Winningham and Tony Daugherty. Each has played around Austin for several years in various bands but they could never escape the songs they had recorded as teenagers at Tony’s parents house in Houston. In 2009 the boys made it official with the formation of Gold Beach. The band’s debut album, Habibti, released earlier this year and has recieved lots of radio play on KUT. It also landed them a SXSW Showcase and a Daytrotter recording session. Catch them in Studio 1a RIGHT HERE! You can also see them at the Continental Club Thursday June 9th.
