You’ve heard the story told before: about the hippies and the rednecks who came together in Austin over a shared love of ‘progressive’ country music. The idea was to get away from the slick, commercial, ‘Nashville’ sound and rediscover an authentic sensibility. But what’s often missing from this classic retelling is an inconvenient truth about marketing and reaching out to ‘the masses’. Dr. Travis Stimeling of Millikin University has written an important new book exploring this chapter of Austin music history. For Texas Music Matters, David Brown spoke with the author.
