More than 4,000 people in the Austin area are now living with HIV/AIDS. Another 150 to 200 people here contract HIV every year.

In this week’s Changing Austin segment, KUT’s Emily Donahue speaks with Mark Peppler from Austin/Travis County Health and Human Services. The agency is holding a community forum on HIV/AIDS on Monday, June 6th from 6:30 to 8:30pm at the Rosewood-Zaragosa Gym.

Peppler says the disease’s image has changed, as treatments have improved. “The disease has almost become a chronic manageable disease, in some ways. It’s sort of lost some of the public interest that it previously had,” said Peppler.
