Trans-Texas Express 5/20/11
Every week we hop in the old minivan to visit our relatives in San Antonio and Dallas for their local music recommendations. Keeping us plugged into the music scenes on either side of I-35 are our brothers from other mothers, San Antonio Express-News music critic Hector Saldana, and KXT 91.7 music host Paul Slavens.
As we got buckled up in our brand new Spirit of America custom van for the trip to Austin’s spicier sibling to the south we called up Hector Saldana for some recommended road trip tunes. Sensing our rowdy mood he immediately pointed us to the Hickoids. The Hickoids have been tearing up Texas saloons for more than a quarter century and their newest CD Kicking it With the Twits should keep the bars hoping with their irreverent take on 60s Brit Rock. But don’t take our word for it, let Hector tell you why The Hickoids are his pick this week.
Hector Saldana’s Pick of the Week
After binging on Tecates and tacos we slowly swung the Spirit of America around for a visit to Austin’s buttoned up older brother on the other end of I-35. Paul Slavens’ pick this week was the perfect cure for our Hickoids hangover. Fishboy is a bedroom project from Denton cartoonist Eric Michener. Michener says his cartoons help listeners get more out of his records. His songs are bright pop numbers layered with lighthearted vocals that add some whimsy to the deceptively smart lyrics. But we’ll let Paul Slavens tell you why Fishboy got his vote this week.
