Last year, Brooklyn’s Phosphorescent hit the road to support their album Here’s To Taking It Easy. Despite the breezy title and the band’s laid-back country-rock, they’re a hard-working group, and they make an Austin stop tonight at the Parish.
Matthew Houck is the principal behind the Phosphorescent name, releasing his first few albums as solo ventures before incorporating a full band. And that’s the best description of the group: Here’s To Taking It Easy boasts a traditional country-rock lineup, featuring pedal steel, horns, and fingerpicked guitars.
But Houck is not a traditional country songwriter. The songs are sadder than any Nashville product, with a cloud of reverb hanging over them to lend a golden, somewhat nostalgic hue. Houck counts Willie Nelson as a major influence–2009 saw the release of an all-Willie covers album, To Willie–and it shows in his writing. A song like “We’ll Be Here Soon” is direct and personal, but with a sing-along chorus that would make Willie smile. This version of the tune was recently recorded at KUT.
