There’s no dismissing the fact that Peter Bjorn & John are masters of the catchy riff. And of course, the adverts on radio and TV follow suit, using the “Young Folks” track for just about everything. It can be a blessing and a curse, but the song still stands on its own. It still rocks. (You’ll be whistling that tune for the rest of the day, by the way.)

The latest album from the Swedish trio is Gimme Some, and on it you’ll find them having fun with some pretty straight-forward ‘60s-inspired pop. It’s got very punchy, very infectious bursts of energy and they sort of keep the deal simple with a guitar, drum and bass approach, in contrast to the epic ballads of their 2006 album Writer’s Block, and the experimental arrangements of their 2009 release Living Thing. They’re still experimenting, though – this time with their catchy hooks taking on an alternate route.

You’ll find Peter Bjorn & John in town for a gig Wednesday night at Antone’s, 213 W. 5th St. Doors open at 8 p.m. This is gonna be a good one, peeps. Highly recommended.
