Of Montreal frontman Kevin Barnes is one fearless, boundless ball of energy. It’s almost impossible to keep up with him. If you’re at one of the Athens band’s shows and bear witness to a multitude of props, costume changes, body paint, glitter and – dare we say – oh…Barnes riding a horse across the stage, chances are you are not hallucinating.
When it comes to live performances, Of Montreal’s spectacular stage antics will leave you enraptured and maybe even breathless at the non-stop surprises . Imaginative, upbeat and unpredictable, the band’s uninhibited dance party mixing soul, funk, psych pop, disco, and 80’s new wave is made even more electrifying by an extremely colorful onstage extravaganza. Then you have Barnes, the ringmaster hellbent on keeping his audience riveted with soul and sensuality.
This may not be for the faint of heart. Then again, Of Montreal fans rejoice in the chaos. You can see Of Montreal perform tonight at the Mohawk, 912 Red River, on the outside stage. Get there early; doors open at 6:30 p.m. Opening the show is Painted Palms, and don’t forget the great aftershow at 10 p.m. on the inside stage, featuring two of my favorite local bands, One Hundred Flowers and Salesman. This one comes highly recommended.
