The thing that I, your humble Austin Music Minute maven Laurie Gallardo, absolutely love about several local bands is their way of bringing traditional sounds and styles to younger, newer audiences who may be finding out about certain kinds of music for the first time. One great way to get such an introduction is by checking out the Marshall Ford Swing Band.
This fabulous quartet takes great pride in bringing a slice of the past to audiences of the present. They take on swing in the way of their great predecessors – Bob Wills, Hank Thompson, and Johnny Gimble – who happens to be the grandfather of Marshall Ford Swing Band vocalist and pianist Emily Gimble. But this band is no mere imitation of the past. They own their performances with an energy that keeps it fresh and modern.
Don’t think that you’re leaving your dance shoes at home tonight – ’cause you aren’t. Check out the Marhsall Ford Swing band tonight at The Highball, located at 1142 S. Lamar, right in the same vicinity as Alamo Drafthouse South. The Highball is outstanding. Plenty of room on that dancefloor, kids. And don’t forget to show up early. One of my favorite musicians of all time, the genuine real deal country-western troubadour, Dale Watson, starts the evening off at 8:30 pm. Yes!
What a bill. This one comes highly recommended.
