Junip is a three-piece band out of Sweden, featuring keyboardist Tobias Winterkorn, drummer Elias Araya, and songwriter and vocalist Jose Gonzalez, whom you may know from his solo work. They’ve been playing together for awhile, since ’98 or ’99, but due to various projects that kept Gonzalez busy, they didn’t release anything until a 2006 EP, plus another EP and their recent full-length, called Fields, last year.

Within Fields, you’ll find Gonzalez’ signature sound – the complexity and intricate melodic detail that he’s become known for, sometimes hypnotic, sometimes psychedelic. It’s rather hushed, but there’s still an intensity to it that comes from the band’s varied Afro-, Latin, electronic and folk influences. The trio indulges in some improvised jamming to get the music out, and from that, they select the pieces they like the most.

Junip will be in Austin for a show Tuesday night at the Mohawk, 912 Red River, on the outside stage. Opening the show is Brooklyn duo Acrylics. This is an early show; doors open at 6:30 p.m. Recommended.
