The music of Swedish trio, Junip, has been said to bring the listener to a place of “haunting serenity.” Normally that sort of hyperbole doesn’t accurately communicate the sound of a band, but in this case, it kind of works.
The lead singer of the group, Jose Gonzalez, made a name for himself with his solo work, and his creativity dominates Junip’s sound – hushed vocals backed by percussive acoustic instruments. Junip has existed as a band since 1999 and the band released a series of EPs last decade. The band finally released an LP, Fields, last year, but Gonzalez admits that the process was plagued by a sense of perfectionism. “We spend a lot of time trying to get where we want to go,” González explains. “There’s a thin line between being stubborn and perfectionist.”
“Far Away” is a driving, up-beat tune that’s perfectly offset by Gonzalez’s softly sung lyrics. This version of the song was recorded live in KUT’s Studio 1A while the band was in town a couple of weeks ago.
