San Francisco-based songwriter and producer John Vanderslice has been called a tinkerer, or a perfectionist at times. Fair enough. It’s that attention to the subtleties, the most minute detail, that makes his music outstanding. He will arrange, rearrange, wander and experiment until achieving such precise, delicate moments that amaze and delight.
This year, Vanderslice released White Wilderness, another beautiful work that again shows his penchant for incredibly bold and lush arrangements, made richer by the Magik*Magik Orchestra, as led by Minna Choi. There are strings and woodwinds crafted into Vanderslice’s already elegant compositions. It all compliments each other, and the orchestra is never overwhelmingly swelling over the depth of each track. It’s also impressive to note that the album was recorded in his studio, Tiny Telephone, in just three days, given its complexity.
You can see Vanderslice perform Tuesday night at the Mohawk, 912 Red River. Opening the show is Dallas-based artist Daniel Hart. Doors open at 9 p.m. Recommended.
