Early on, Femi Kuti was not satisfied with merely following in his father Fela Kuti’s footsteps. The heir of the Afrobeat originator formed his own band in 1985 called The Positive Force, and eventually discovered his own voice as a music artist and activist.
Kuti worked briefly with Motown before making his first international album, Shoki Shoki, in 1998, then collaborated with Mos Def and Common on the album Fight To Win. He released his live album, Live at the Shrine, in 2004, followed by Day By Day in 2008.
Things have come full circle. Kuti returned to his musical roots for inspiration and made Africa For Africa (2011). It’s a breathtaking, energetic combination of urban music influences and the sounds he grew up with, and brings a new image of Afrobeat to a bigger international audience.
Femi Kuti and The Positive Force perform tonight at ACL Live at The Moody Theater, located in Downtown Austin at 310 W. Willie Nelson Blvd. Doors open at 6:30 p.m., and the show begins at 8 p.m.
This will be phenomenal. Highly recommended.
