Songwriter Bill Callahan’s latest release, Apocalypse, is more simply arranged with less instrumentation than his previous albums, and probably his most powerful album to date. If you didn’t get a chance to check out Jeff McCord’s review of it for Texas Music Matters, you can listen to it here.
Callahan carries the entire 8-song album with his own carefully-crafted language and that understated tone of voice that isn’t so much about singing as it is storytelling. At first, Apocalypse may leave you feeling a bit baffled with his words, or even his delivery, but it’s that dry wit that makes it so enjoyable.
Callahan will perform tonight at the Mohawk, 912 Red River, and this is one you won’t want to miss. Songwriter Sophia Knapp will open. This is an early show, and doors open at 6:30 p.m. Recommended.
