Shearwater Signs to Sub Pop

Johnathan Meiburg, frontman of the Austin quartet, has confirmed to KUT that the band has signed a record deal with the “major-indie” label, Sub Pop, based in Seattle. Meiburg also told KUT’s Andy Uhler that the band is set to begin recording the follow up to 2010′s The Golden Archipelago in a couple of weeks. The recording sessions will be split between Austin with Good Danny’s Danny Reisch (What Made Milwaukee Famous, The Bright Light Social Hour, White Denim) and Connecticut with Peter Katis (Interpol, The National, Mercury Rev).
Meiburg says that this record is a complete departure from the Island Arc Series, a trilogy of records beginning with 2006′s Palo Santo, 2008′s Rook and 2010′s The Golden Archipelago. Meiburg says the new material is “less heady, more visceral.”
Meiburg says he hopes to have all of the recording done by September of this year, with a prospective release in early 2012.
