Portrait of an Artist: Amie Elyn
“When people started talking, performance art kinda began,” said Amie Elyn, when I asked her about the history of performance art. “Really you just need a person, and an audience, and an intent to entertain. That’s it.”
Elyn, an actor by trade, started working on her character of Arcie Cola back in 2005. I first met Arcie at a bingo hall where she and her sister Shasta were hovering over sheets of blotted papers. Since then Arcie and Shasta Cola’s bawdy and bold public access show “Cookin’ Good” has garnered much critical praise, and even though the show’s run has come to an end, it maintains a strong online following. Arcie is now branching out into the field of fortune telling, as OraCola, who you can see live every Tuesday night at 10pm CST on cable channel 16 in Austin, Texas.
Amie Elyn talked with me about her life, her art, and becoming Arcie Cola.
