KUT Volunteers visit Studio 1A!

Last week we held a Volunteer Drawing for a chance to see a performance in Studio 1A and tour the station. On Monday, KUT enjoyed a rare live audience in Studio 1A as the 10 winners came in to see Michael Fracasso!
We started out by heading down to to the studio, where the volunteers took their seats and chatted with the staff and band. Once the on-air light went on, we were live! Austin-based singer-songwriter Michael Fracasso put on a great performance (click here to check out the video). It was so neat to hear applause between songs on a live set.
Then engineer Cliff Hargrove invited the volunteers into the 1A Control Room, and let us hear the last song we heard during the performance. The difference was huge! Inside the studio, sound is muted and each instrument was individually mic’d. Cliff expertly blends the levels for each to get what you hear on the radio – and hearing both the studio and on-air sounds right after another was really cool.
Afterwards, we took a tour of the station, and ended with some cookies, coffee and brainstorming about future visits. It was a blast! We were so excited to be able to give this special behind-the-scenes peek of what we do here, and are looking forward to putting together more opportunities to do this!
Below are some great photos KUT photographer Jeff Heimsath took of the visit:
