Budget cuts up for debate at both the federal and state level will have a significant impact on local governments.  Police are no exception.  On today’s podcast, KUT’s Mose Buchele reports how the loss of grant money could hit Austin law enforcement.

Where Does Seized Drug Money End Up?

Mexican drug cartels continue their war over lucrative trafficking routes south of the border while a substantial amount of money continues to flow in from the north. Most of the money reaches Mexico, but millions are seized by U.S. law enforcement before reaching their final destination. Where that money ends up is becoming a contentious issue, as Mario Carrillo reports for KUT News and Reporting Texas.com.

UT Safety Alert System Put to the Test

University of Texas police issued a campus-wide safety alert late Monday afternoon, after people reported seeing a man carrying what looked like two shotguns near the Rec Sports Building on San Jacinto Blvd.  The weapons turned out to be replicas.  Monday was the first time authorities had to put their campus warning system to a real test since September, when a student brought an AK-47 to campus and ultimately took his own life.  UTPD spokeswoman Rhonda Weldon says this time, more people got the message faster.
