Firefighters Containing Some Fires, New Ones Spreading

The Texas Forest Service says firefighters are making progress on some of the bigger wildfires in West Texas.  But the fire in the Fort Davis area is still not contained.  That fire has burned about 120,000 acres. The Forest Service says several new smaller fires also popped up yesterday in East Texas. The Austin Fire Department says Austin firefighters who’ve deployed to West Texas are mainly being assigned to protect structures such as homes, schools and businesses from the flames.

Bills Would Require Single-Member Districts in Austin

There has been talk of single-member districts for the Austin City Council for the past several years, but the city still elects council members at large.  Now there are bills in the Texas Legislature that would require Austin to make the change. Voter Registration Deadline is Tomorrow

Thursday’s the deadline to register to vote in the May 14 general elections.  Three Austin City Council seats are on the ballot.  Incumbents Chris Riley, Randi Shade and Laura Morrison are up for re-election.  Early voting starts Monday, May 2.  Travis County voters can get more information here.

Austin’s Formula One to Include MotoGP Race

Austin’s Formula One race track officially has a name:  Circuit of the Americas.  The track will also be the home for world-class motorcycle racing. MotoGP announced Tuesday that it will be holding its championship in Austin beginning in 2013.  That would make Austin the first and only track to host both Formula One and the MotoGP Championships.
