Typically, to rein in that enormous Motown sound, you’d need a studio that’s seen the likes of Phil Spector – like the Wall of Sound at Gold Star Studios in Hollywood. But for the incredible six-piece pop/R&B sensation Fitz & the Tantrums, it all began in front man Fitz’s living room.
That’s where Fitz started recording the outrageously good songs on their debut full-length, Pickin’ Up the Pieces. They’ve got such an infectious vintage feel but with a modern pop kick. That got the attention of Maroon 5‘s Adam Levine, who was so taken by their sound that he asked them to tour with his band.
Of course, there’s also much to say about their presentation. The band keeps it classy and real with a horn and rhythm section, vintage organ, smashing ensembles and one tight, electrifying show.
This is a live performance you do not want to miss (many of us at KUT witnessed this first hand when they played our SXSW Day Stage show this year – and jaws hit the floor). Fitz & The Tantrums play Tuesday night at La Zona Rosa, 612 W. 4th St. April Smith starts out the evening. Doors open at 8 p.m. Highly recommended.
