I mean what I say. If you’ve ever seen Carrie Rodriguez take to the stage, you know what I’m talking about. She takes Americana and owns it. Roots music can be gentler and beautiful, but Rodriguez knows how to give it a powerful edge while keeping that beauty in tact.
On top of having mad skills and classical training, the singer/songwriter has worked with one of the best mentors ever (all hail Chip Taylor, thank you). She went from progeny to outstanding presence in the roots music scene, although her songs remain impressively unclassifiable. She runs the gamut – folk, rock, country and all manner of multi-instrumental composition, including guitar, mandolin, and fiddle-playing that will stop you dead in your tracks – and one lovely voice to boot.
Rodriguez is starting a weekly residency, the Woodshed Series, at Threadgill’s World Headquarters, 301 Riverside Dr. It’s each Wednesday throughout April, and begins this Wednesday night. The show starts at 8 p.m. Recommended.
