Akron/Family II: The Cosmic Birth and Journey of Shinju TNT is the name of Akron/Family’s latest record, but don’t let the ridiculous title fool you. Beneath the Brooklyn trio’s hippie aesthetic is a powerful psych-rock band that’s unafraid to push boundaries and defy expectations.

Akron/Family II is stuffed full of the band’s best (and sometimes worst) tendencies. Songs build up with tribal drumming, electronic flourishes, and fiery lead guitar before the trio breaks out into multi-part harmonies. The group draws inspiration from such disparate sources as Appalachian folk music and hip-hop, and their live shows are notoriously chaotic and cathartic. Suffice to say, there’s never a dull moment in an Akron/Family song.

Today’s song of the day is “Silly Bears,” by Akron/Family.
