It was 175 years ago today in 1836 that delegates meeting at Washington on the Brazos declared Texas to be free and independent from Mexico. The reverberations continue to be felt today in areas as far flung as the Middle East, according to University of Texas historian H. W. Brands.

“We’re seeing the breakdown of old orders. We’re seeing a challenge to existing states and it’s all made in the name of the people and democracy,” Brands said today during a speech at the Texas State Library and Archives Commission.

“What’s going on in Tunisia, in Egypt, in Libya and who knows where else, traces it roots all the way back to the Washington on the Brazos 175 years ago today,” he said.
