This Week in Texas Music History – Frederick Lemsky
On March 13, 1836, Czech immigrant Frederick Lemsky enlisted in the Texas army, just as the young republic was fighting for its independence from Mexico. According to some accounts, Lemsky played the tune “Come to the Bower” on his flute at the Battle of San Jacinto, thereby helping rally Sam Houston’s troops to defeat the Mexican General Santa Anna.
Frederick Lemsky continued to perform and teach music until 1844, when he accidentally drowned in Galveston Bay. Among his few possessions was a pair of flutes, which were auctioned off for just over $2.
