Sharon Van Etten is an American singer-songwriter based in Brooklyn, New York. Originally from New Jersey, Van Etten accredits Kyp Malone from TV On the Radio with introducing her to the New York music scene. In a 2010 interview with A.V. Milwaukee, Van Etten explains how the two became friends, and later goes on to say, “I gave him my homemade CD, and he said, ‘You need to move to New York.’ He helped book my first couple of shows, he introduced me to venues in New York—he really gave me my start in Brooklyn. I feel really lucky.”
Van Etten’s tell it how she feels it lyrical approach is, if nothing else, honest. Painfully, and beautifully honest. Her newest album, Epic, released last fall, manages to be deeply soothing, all the while exploring the depths of betrayal, obsession, egotism and other elements of love. Today’s Song of the Day, One Day, was performed on KUT’s SXSW stage at the Hilton – the melancholy nature of the tune magnified (and made only better) by her 9:00am show time.
