I’ve had the pleasure of seeing Shapes Have Fangs play at different venues around town, but they really made an impression on me having fun at their 2009 Austin Psych Fest appearance. It felt psychedelic but with jagged edges, blasting at an appropriately high eardrum-rattling volume. That’s what parties are made of.
Now the band brings to the table their latest release, Dinner In the Dark, a glorious din of electrifying garage rock injected with R&B and a heavy dose of psych. Beyond groovy, and packs one hell of a punch at live shows.
Catch them at their official LP release Thursday night at the Mohawk, 912 Red River. They’ll have copies of the album on vinyl and (are you ready?) cassette tapes for sale at the show, if you’re so inclined. Headlining is John Wesley Coleman III, and opening the show are Philip Sambol (The Strange Boys), and Horse + Donkey.
This is a must-see. Highly recommended.
