Texas House Committee Voted on Budget This Morning
The Associated Press is reporting the House Appropriations Committee voted Wednesday morning on its version of the state’s budget bill for the next two years. It includes big cuts to education and health services. The state is trying to close a budget shortfall of more than $20 billion.
Money for services for the elderly is among the cuts being proposed. On today’s pod, KUT’s Matt Largey looks at what the cuts could mean for the safety of the state’s elderly.
Griner Leads Baylor to the Sweet 16
The top-seeded Baylor Bears women’s basketball team is in the Sweet 16. Brittney Griner scored a record 30 points in last night’s NCAA tournament game against West Virginia. The Bears won 82-68. They will now play Wisconsin-Green Bay on Sunday in Dallas.
Funeral Arrangements Set for Pinetop Perkins
A public funeral will be held in Austin Monday night for Grammy award winning bluesman Joe Willie “Pinetop” Perkins. He passed away Monday at the age of 97. Perkins’ funeral will be at the Cook Walden Funeral Home on North Lamar Boulevard at 5 p.m. Visitation is Sunday from 3 to 5 p.m. Perkins will be buried in Clarksdale, Miss. on April 1.
