San Antonio Halts Talks Over Nuclear Expansion
The nuclear power plant emergency in Japan is affecting nuclear talks here in Texas. The San Antonio Express News reports the CEO of San Antonio’s CPS Energy has announced that the utility and NRG Energy have mutually agreed to suspend talks over San Antonio possibly buying power from two proposed reactors. They’re being considered as an addition to the South Texas Project plant near Matagorda Bay.
There is some financial uncertainty as Tokyo Electric Power Company was slated to be a partner in the South Texas expansion. Tokyo Electric is the company that runs Japan’s troubled nuclear power plant. Austin currently gets about 27% of its power from the South Texas Project.
