Austin-based songwriter Hilary York has had a life filled with music. Growing up with a family that owned a record store had a huge influence, along with piano lessons and her natural ability to write poetry and sing. But a significant amount of credit goes to Major Tom for changing her life.
York had lived in many places as a girl, including Germany, Bolivia, and Australia, and she hadn’t had many opportunities to see a lot of live music shows. She mostly saw musicians on TV in videos. Then, one fateful day, she saw David Bowie perform his hit “Space Oddity” on a local television station. That was the life-changing moment. It was exactly what she wanted to do: Make music.
After spending time in Europe working on her songwriting and graduating from college, York eventually settled in Austin, where she’s been performing since 2000. She’s made two albums, her debut The Moon (2006) and In the Dark (2009), and new material is definitely on the horizon. You’ll get a chance to see York play a show Wednesday night at The Ghost Room, 304 W. 4th St. Her set begins at 9:30 p.m. Do check it out.
