I cannot say enough great things about this dude.
Songwriter Hayes Carll, storyteller extraordinaire and basically a really cool guy, has another winner with his latest album, KMAG YOYO. It’s a great mix of classic country, all-out rock ‘n’ roll and a little gospel to get you fired up. And, of course, let us not forget Carll’s dry wit throughout. It’s this irresistible directness and unpretentious delivery he puts in each of his songs that make them so great.
KMAG YOYO is actually an acronym Carll came across one day when doing some research for the song that became the title track (he explains what it stands for in a video he made about the album – and you’ll understand why he makes it work). It pretty much summed up what he was trying to say about the character in the song, and it stuck – even though the title initially mystified people. “I wanted a record where nobody knew what it meant, and I think I’ve succeeded,” Carll said, once again showing off that wicked sense of humor.
Hayes Carll is starting a KMAG YOYO Club Tour of Texas this week – fifteen shows in all, including stops in North Texas, Central Texas and the Gulf Coast. You can see him play at 8 p.m. Tuesday night at the Saxon Pub, 1320 S. Lamar, and at 8:30 p.m. Wednesday night at the Cactus Cafe, at 24th and Guadalupe on the UT Campus. You’ve got two chances to see Hayes rock the house – do not miss out. Highly recommended.
