Get Involved: Boys & Girls Club of the Austin Area
Our Mission: To inspire and enable all young people, especially those who need us most, to realize their full potential as productive, responsible and caring citizens.
Boys & Girls Clubs of the Austin Area
Boys & Girls Clubs of the Austin Area (BGCAA) is a 501(c)(3) non-profit, youth development organization that, since its inception in 1967 has provided a safe place for youth to learn and grow. Every day across the Austin area, youth ages 6 to 18, many who are overcoming difficult circumstances, walk through the door of their local Boys & Girls Club – a positive and safe place where they: experience life enhancing and character development programs; develop ongoing relationships with caring, adult professionals; and most importantly, find hope and opportunity.
BGCAA helps almost 10,000 kids a year and nearly 1,500 per day grow into healthy, responsible, caring young adults. Through hundreds of programs and services, Club members find their individual competencies, and develop relationships with caring, positive role models. Ultimately, our goal is to help each of our kids develop a sense of competency, a sense of belonging, a sense of usefulness, and a sense of influence.
Who We Serve
Boys & Girls Clubs of the Austin Area reaches a diverse group of youth and teens ages 6 to 18 at 15 local area clubs everyday. With a high concentration of children of color and with limited economic resources, BGCAA is ideally positioned to assist youth in improving their educational and social skills, physical health and fitness and emotional well-being. We strive to create a foundation for a positive peer culture who value learning skills and contribute to society. Our programs are compelling enough to appeal to kids as an alternative to unsupervised, “hanging out” time after school.
Boys & Girls Clubs Five Core Program Areas:
Character and Leadership Development – We empower youth to support and influence their Club and community, sustain meaningful relationships with others, develop a positive self-image, participate in the democratic process, and respect their own and others’ cultural identities.
Education and Career Development – Programs to improve children’s reading, writing, arithmetic and computer skills, as well as apply leaning to everyday situations. Career planning and goal setting are also objectives of these programs.
Health and Life Skills – The focus is on the prevention and awareness of drugs, alcohol and teenage pregnancy. The goal of this program is to encourage young people to engage in positive behaviors to nurture their own well-being, set personal goals, and become successful, self-sufficient adults.
The Arts – Programs aimed towards developing self-expression, creativity and cultural awareness through knowledge and appreciation of visual and performing arts, crafts, photography, storytelling, literacy, creative writing and more. Members have the opportunity to try out new art media and master new skills.
Sports, Fitness and Recreation – Sports and fitness are emphasized as a positive use of leisure time. Team sports leagues and individual sports help kids learn social skills, stress management, and an appreciation for the natural environment.
