Are you an aspiring musician looking for a little motivation? You may want to take a page from local singer/songwriter Erin Ivey’s playbook and take an office job in Peoria, Illinois, let the bitter winter and mind numbing monotony take its toll, get fed up and promise not to return to Austin until you have an album. That was 2007 and the album was The 11th Floor. Named after the floor of the Stoneleigh Hotel in Dallas where many of the songs were written.  It wasn’t long before local press and music fans started lining up to see Ivey play at one of her countless shows around town. Building on the momentum of that first album with two strong EPs, Austin Lullabies EP and Sweet Little EP, Ivey quickly established herself as one of Austin’s unique new voices.
Now four years after moving back to Austin Erin Ivey is set to release her 2nd full-length record, Broken Gold, on February 22nd. Ivey explores new territory in the new album with a darker, sultrier sound that moves away from the country/folk sounds of her first recordings. Much of the new sound comes from her choice of The Finest Kind as her backing band. The trio’s dub and R&B background give Ivey a chance to stretch her voice in new and exciting ways.
Erin Ivey performed live today in KUT’s Studio 1a with Jay Trachtenberg. She will celebrate her CD release with a performance at Waterloo Records this Tuesday Februaury 22nd at 5pm. Be sure to join Erin Ivey at The Highball afterwards for the official after party.
