Darden Smith says that songwriting is “a solitary, restless pursuit.” And, he adds, so is photography. The two art forms require some alone time for exploration and hopefully some inspired moments. He imagined that combining them – music and images – would perhaps bring a different perspective on his latest work.
Smith’s new album/book Marathon thrives on that approach. It’s a collaboration between Smith and artist Kate Breakey, whose photography is paired with lyrics from Smith’s songs. Smith explains that the songs and Breakey’s photos of the natural world reflect an idea of a place that is just beyond reach.
“Collaborating with Kate on this book has allowed me to weave another layer amongst these Marathon lyrics,” Smith says in his book. “It’s given me a chance to go past what I was thinking when I wrote the songs, maybe to the place I went before I put pen to paper.”
You can see Darden Smith at an instore performance tomorrow afternoon at 3 p.m. at Waterloo Records, 600-A N. Lamar, and at his official Marathon release show tomorrow night at 8:30 p.m. at the Cactus Café, 24th and Guadalupe on the UT campus. Recommended.
