Brooklyn’s Crystal Stilts are at the forefront of a crop of garage bands that draw influence not just from the usual ’60s suspects (like the Velvet Underground), but also from ’80s post-punk. It’s a modernized mixture–garage rock has constantly evolved over the past half-century, and Crystal Stilts are taking it even further.

The group is built around the core duo of Brad Hargett and JB Townsend, who formed the group in 2003 and subsequently added three more members to fill out their sound. They will release their second album on April 11, titled In Love With Oblivion. The record burns with electricity as the group has beefed up their sound with extra guitars and organs. But their pop sensibility really shines through as well: the songs might sound dark, but touches of girl-group harmonies, handclaps, and even some rockabilly twang lighten the affair.

Today’s song of the day comes from In Love With Oblivion. Here’s “Through The Floor,” by Crystal Stilts.
