Perry, Dewhurst Sworn in for Third Terms
Billions of dollars will be cut from the state budget during the 2011 legislative session. But Governor Rick Perry’s speech didn’t try to gloss over that fact.
The governor talked about the tough economic times and hard choices ahead for state lawmakers. He continued the Republican call to do what’s necessary without increasing taxes.
“As Texans, we always take care of the least among our population. The frail, the young, the elderly. We will protect them, support them and empower them,” Perry said.
“But we cannot risk the future of millions of taxpayers in the process. We must cut spending to keep our economic engine on track.”
Lt. Governor David Dewhurst was also sworn in today. Both he and the governor stretched their speeches into national politics by taking shots at President Obama and his policies.
Dewhurst is expected to run for U.S. Senate in 2012. Perry, while he steadfastly denies any interest, has long been rumored as a presidential candidate.
