Waiting for Youthquake ’10
November 2008 is long gone, and as campaigning for the 2010 midterm elections builds to a climax, “Where have all the young votes gone,” to paraphrase the old folk song.
President Obama will be going on MTV later this month. Vice President Biden tried to rally young Democratic support at Penn State. But in Texas, it’s been more of a chore for candidates to drum up backing from young voters.
Part of it may be the normal midterm voting doldrums combined with a lack of knowledge (or interest) in the gubernatorial campaign or any of the races on the November ballot.
But Austin American-Statesman reporter Corrie MacLaggan tells KUT’s Ian Crawford in this week’s “Texas Political Parlor” podcast that both of the major party candidates for governor are still trying to energize the youth base before Election Day.
