Once upon a time (just this past May, to be exact), the State of Texas was forecast to be facing an $18 billion shortfall for its next two-year budget cycle. But that was then. This is now.

The new estimated shortfall is currently $21 billion, but the actual deficit will not be revealed until Comptroller Susan Combs unveils the biennial revenue estimate next January, the day before the 2011 Legislature convenes. But (official or not) the seemingly growing hole in the budget could make for some confusing rhetoric on the campaign trail. KUT’s Ian Crawford and Jason Embry of the Austin American-Statesman discuss the budget gap and its potential fallout in this week’s installment of the “Texas Political Parlor.”
