Author Debra Monroe has garnered acclaim for her fiction writing in the past, but her latest book is a memoir. On the Outskirts of Normal: Forging a Family Against the Grain tells the story of a difficult but rewarding time in Monroe’s life. In the span of just a few years, she faced serious illness, started dating again, reunited with her long-lost mother, and remodeled a house, all while adopting and raising an African-American baby in a small Hill Country town.
On the Outskirts of Normal has caught the eye of both Vanity Fair and O, the Oprah Magazine, which have listed the book as required reading.
To celebrate the release of the book, there will be a launch party Thursday night at BookPeople, with proceeds going to Extend-A-Care for Kids.
