In the Spirit of SX: Girls Rock Camp Austin

In The Spirit of SX
One of the biggest trends @ the SXSWi conference has revolved around how non-profits can use technology to raise funding, recruit volunteers, find resources and create community around their cause. Most of panels focus on how non-profits can use free tools – ie. social media, multimedia editing to create content that furthers the awareness around their mission and causes the community to rally around their cause. We wanted to channel the innovative spirit of SXSW Interactive and connect the community to an organization that is doing some wonderful things. During SXSW Music, we will follow GIRLS ROCK CAMP-an amazing Austin non-profit that seeks to empower girls and women through music. We’ll bring you interviews with some of the inspiring women behind the scenes as well as some of the empowered rockstars who’ve learned some life-changing skills and made some incredible friends. We’ll take a peek at their fabulous showcases during SXSW and we’ll show you how you can get involved and help the organization succeed.
Mission
Girls Rock Camp Austin is a nonprofit dedicated to empowering girls and women of all backgrounds and abilities through musical education and performance. Girls Rock Camp Austin is a day camp exclusively for girls. Qualified counselors will instruct campers in guitar, bass, drums, keyboards, and vocals. Armed with fresh, enhanced skills, campers will form bands and learn to write original songs together to perform at the camp’s finale. In workshops, girls learn about:
* Team-building
* Women who rock
* Decoding images of girls and women in popular culture
* Exploring gender/identity issues
* Music journalism and ‘zine making
* How to get started in the music business
* Silk screening, self-defense, and more
Girls Rock Camp Austin depends on the hard work, advice, and support of many individual volunteers, donors and business sponsors. Volunteers are essential to both the existence and the spirit of the camp.
