Twang Twang Shock A Boom live – December 10, 2009
To walk to class through UT’s West Mall in the 1989-1990 academic year was to experience one of the most breathtaking musical projects Austin has ever seen. For 10 brief months, the ebullient acoustic trio of David Garza, Jeff Haley, and Chris Searles was there, cranking out quirky, organically hilarious tunes with the bare-bones setup of guitar, upright bass, and a guitar case standing in for drums. It was lightning in a bottle, and it all started when Garza and his music-school compadres decided to go busk in the West Mall for a little extra cash. Since then, the members have gone their separate ways to carve out their own musical niches. Two decades after their genesis however, the band is back and playing at their favorite venue: The Cactus Cafe. The gigs are December 11 & 12. You can catch them before that, live in Studio 1A with Jay Trachtenberg Thursday at 2.
