AMM Picks: ACL Afterparty Goodness From The Raveonettes and Devotchka

October 1, 2009 6:00 am by: Laurie Gallardo

Holy smokes. Chances are that you may be a bit overwhelmed with all the choices you have at the 2009 ACL Fest. So many bands! It makes the head spin! And then…there’s the phenom known as…The Afterparty (cue dramatic chord). It’s as if to say, “No! You didn’t have enough with an entire day’s worth of music and partying. Here’s some more music and partying to stack onto your already full and now overflowing plate. Woo!” But it is about the music, after all. So KUT’s Austin Music Minute would like to humbly offer some suggestions for your after-ACL listening pleasure on Friday.

First recommendation, with a full disclosure: All right. I admit it. Anyone who is the least bit familiar with me, your AMM hostess, Laurie Gallardo, already knows of my perpetual swoon over The Raveonettes. They’re a longtime favorite of mine. I have great love for their 60s-inspired fuzzy pop awesomeness and dreamy two-part harmonies. So, I’d like to recommend their show Friday night at The Parish, 214 E. 6th St. The very groovy psych-touch of Here We Go Magic will start the evening. Doors open around 10 p.m.

Second recommendation: Decadent multi-instrumental ensemble Devotchka puts on an amazing show, as does Venezuelan disco/funky-funk madmen Los Amigos Invisibles. They’re both on a bill Friday night at La Zona Rosa, 612 W. 4th St. Incredible music from these two.

And some additions to the neverending list of afterparty treats:

Friday -

STS9 (Sound Tribe Sector 9) w/ Virtual Boy at Stubb’s Waller Creek Amphitheater

!!! w/ Harlem and Neon Indian at Emo’s outside

The Virgins at Stubb’s inside

Saturday -

Thievery Corporation w/ Federico Aubele at Stubb’s

Rebirth Brass Band at Stubb’s

The Zeros w/ Broken Gold, Love Collector and Lost Controls at the Mohawk outside

More recommendations are on the way.
