Todd Wolfson Benefit Tonight at Antone’s

Photographer Todd Wolfson puts a face to the music. From the famous to the not-so-famous, both within the Austin music scene and from all parts of the musical universe, Wolfson has an instinct for capturing the essence of a feeling you get before something happens. Something big. A very specific, split-second moment in which you sit up, take notice, and want more. It goes well with rock ‘n’ roll, indeed.

Wolfson has been a photographer in Austin for 30 years, and along the way has not only helped bring attention to Austin musicians, but has also dedicated much of his time and effort into taking promotional photos, creating album covers, and making show posters for numerous events. Full disclosure, by the way: I, your humble AMM hosty with the mosty, Laurie Gallardo, had the pleasure of working with Wolfson for photos of my own band (I’m the extra-snarly looking one, cheers, thanks).

Life, of course, has its unexpected twists and turns. Sometimes dreadful ones. Wolfson was enjoying a bike ride on the morning of July 11th when he hit a rough patch of pavement, causing him to be thrown over the handlebars and into the street. He landed on his head and right elbow. The injuries he sustained required 11 stitches to the head, 16 pins and two metal plates in his arm, and numerous internal injuries. The accident has put his career on an extended hiatus. He’s currently dealing with a rather painful rehabilitation and mounting medical bills.

Friends of Wolfson have put together a benefit show to lend a hand, which starts around 7 p.m. tonight at Antone’s, 513 W. 5th St. And what a list of friends it is: Alejandro Escovedo, Ian McLagan and the Bump Band, Carolyn Wonderland, Will Sexton, Ruby James, Paula Nelson, Skyrocket, and lots more. No doubt there’ll be surprise guests stepping up on stage, too, so check it out.

Sending good vibes your way for a full recovery, Todd.
