Dale Watson Plays Tonight at The Continental Club

July 6, 2009 6:00 am by: Laurie Gallardo

Dale Watson isn’t bogged down by genres. Don’t waste the man’s time. He does what he does, and he does it with great conviction. If you simply must find a term to describe his mix of roots styles, Watson will give you one that he himself invented: Ameripolitan. You can even find it in Wikipedia, smarty pants.

Watson describes it as “original music with ‘prominent’ roots influence.” He wanted to dump all the preconceived notions and expectations attached to other labels, so he made a name up for himself.

According to Watson: “When folks ask, I hesitate, down right embarrassed really, to say country. I didn’t used to be that way, but with the change in country, the term doesn’t mean the same as it used to. If you say traditional, or old, or western swing most folks think ‘retro’ and dismiss it without hearing it. I wanted a name that didn’t say country anything and didn’t give anyone a preconceived idea.”

Watson will help you start the week off right with his show tonight at The Continental Club, 1315 S. Congress Ave. He’s onstage at 10 p.m.

As always, here’s to Ameripolitan good times.
