Austin2Africa Benefit Concert This Sunday at Momo’s
It began with a visit to a township in South Africa by volunteer worker Vanessa Noel.
She was providing assistance to an orphanage in Khayelitsha, the second largest township in South Africa. She went to a neighboring preschool on her time off and discovered it was in horrible condition, which literally put the children there in danger. She inquired about the cost of repairs, such as replacing floors and walls, and the quote was less than $1,000. With help from the community and friends abroad, funds were secured and repairs were made in a week.
This inspired Noel and others to imagine similar achievements that could be accomplished with more funds and more volunteers. It was the beginning of Austin2Africa.
A group of 8 Austin volunteers will be traveling to Cape Town, South Africa to help restore an orphanage in the Nyanga province. The orphanage, Emasithandane Children’s Project (Emasi), is home to children orphaned by AIDS. To raise more funds for this project, the volunteers have organized a fundraiser with some great musical entertainment.
The fundraiser is this Sunday, 5 p.m. to 9 p.m., at Momo’s, 618 W. 6th St., and features performances by John Pointer, Akina Adderley & The Vintage Playboys, Kalu James, Paul Banks and the Carousels, and Tandoorifinger. Rudy’s BBQ will offer free food while it lasts for this event.
All proceeds go directly to the project. Check out the wonderful music and donate to a most worthy cause.
