Vicki Genfan Plays This Saturday at MCC Austin
There’s a focused look on Vicki Genfan’s face as her fingers fly across the fret board of her acoustic guitar. It’s incredible to watch. They are not easy moves, but it sounds flawless, almost like a very natural energy that flows from her fingertips.
Genfan technically isn’t a household name, but she’s building momentum into the mainstream with her phenomenal performances. She’s known as “the Jimi Hendrix of acoustic guitar,” and has the skill to back it up. She’s performed in some of the greatest venues throughout the world, and festivals like the International Montreal Jazz Festival, Germany’s Open Strings Guitar Festival, and the Soave Guitar Festival in Italy.
Some very big news came from the aficionados of Guitar Player Magazine last year: Gefan was selected as the Guitar Superstar of 2008 – which is no small feat. She was one of just a few female competitors, and one of only two acoustic guitar players, on top of that. It’s mostly guys who dominate the guitar field, but Genfan is as much of an expert and – pardon the expression – a badass as the other guitar gods.
By the way…Genfan was asked to play a Dean guitar (Dean is the parent company of Luna Guitars, which created a signature guitar just for her) on popular gameshow The Price is Right. They were giving away a Dean guitar as a prize. Genfan was on for about 12 seconds, but more than likely it was the coolest 12 seconds ever.
Genfan will be in Austin this Saturday for a special performance at MCC Austin, at 8601 S. 1st St. Bring a canned food item and you’ll get in for free. Yes, free. A chance to see Vicki Genfan play for FREE? It’s an offer you can’t refuse. The show is scheduled to begin at 6:24 p.m.
